Engagement means more than just employees doing their work. It also means the company engaging in ways
to increase and improve the efficiency with which people perform.
IOW, employee engagement is more than getting employees to engage. It means engaging in what impacts their performance.
“Companies have traditionally relied on growth or expansion to increase profits. Another strategy for increasing the bottom lin is to focus on efficiency.” (Stegmeier)
Ways to reduce the cost of performance (usually the costs of time and resources required to perform), contribute to the bottom line. When those ways excite and enthuse and energize employees, engagement accompanies efficiency.
Alternative workspace is such a tool. Alternative workspace (“office hoteling”) provides temporary office space on an as-needed basis. “When programs like this succeed, they make t possible for organizations to reduce real-estae overhead, lessen energy consumption and costs, and support a mobile workforce.” (Stegmeier)
But it’s more than just setting up temporary space that employees “reserve” as needed. Truly effective management of an alternative workspace effort includes:
- Space management,
- Utilization measurement,
- Trend analysis and projection
All this makes sense as real-estate is usually the 2nd greatest expense (behind labor). So when a company maximizes the use of space, it also maximizes the return on its real-estate investment(s).
Diane Stegmeier’s scheduled webinar for PeopleCube was apparently cancelled. This whitepaper provides a healthy overview of the points introduced here and to have been covered in Diane’s presentation.

Tim,
I’m flattered that you took the time to emphasize the importance of alternative workspace strategy and the PeopleCube-sponsored Webinar, Strengthening the Business Case for Alternative Workspace Environments.
This Webinar was not cancelled. In fact, Stegmeier Consulting Group and PeopleCube enjoyed a record-breaking number of attendees logging in from around the world, representing diverse organizations relative to company size and industry. Phone calls and e-mails began flowing in immediately following my presentation, reinforcing that the time is NOW for organizations to focus on balancing both workplace cost reduction and workforce productivity improvement.
Sincerely,
Diane Stegmeier
