Granted, it's a thinking activity. However, if it enables an individual to understand more clearly what is expected of him/her, it's worth the mental effort. The opportunity for a manager to invest a little time helping an employee categorize expectations will have great returns as it more fully engages the employee.
Additionally, the categorizing of expectations increases the likelihood that they will be met, the individual will perform (and be evaluated) well, and so will work more energetically, stay longer, seek improved performance.
It's worth it if the manager is willing to make it so.

Interesting points. Categorizing the TYPES of expectations seems more academic than anything else. How much meaning is that likely to have?
