Ask your employees…

Develop an internal questionnaire.

Last
week I posed 3 questions to ask (and answer) to set your plan for
quality improvement of your business's employee engagement. This week I
offer you three more steps, each more specific, more action-oriented
than the previous.

Each and any of these (or last week's) tips
will benefit your organization. All of them taken together can provide
a synergistic boost to your engagement and performance by your
employees.

Today's suggestion:

Develop an internal
questionnaire. This questionnaire will gather universal responses and
insights from your employee base about engagement. Their perceptions,
their opinions, their knowledge are invaluable to design and
implementation of a successful engagement plan. You can use the
information to maximize your effort.

Here are 3 points to keep in mind as you develop your questionnaire:

Be specific
of the questionnaire’s purpose. You may want employees to share their
perceptions of employee engagement in general. Your questionnaire may
ask what they see as the company's current level(s) of engagement. You
may gather their suggestions for increasing/improving employee
engagement. The possibilities are almost infinite. Note: it's best to
keep your questionnaire focused on one area and to ask only 3-5
questions.

Involve employees in its design. Once
you know the purpose of the questionnaire and have a clear idea of the
types of questions you will ask, turn it over to select employees for
final suggestions. Listen to their advice about final wording and
design. Trust your instincts and their input.

Test it, then use it
with constant attention to its revision. Ignore pride of authorship.
Run several tests of your questionnaire. Is it gathering the type of
information you desire? Are employees accepting being asked to answer
the questions? Do responses come back relatively quickly? Be quick to
note (admit?) if the questionnaire needs to be revised.

I am happy to share with you sample questionnaires and procedure for implementing your own.
