Businesses that make their stand for a culture of engagement vibrantly known throughout their
workforce stand the best chance of achieving specific success.
Here are three researched examples of specific successes a culture of engagement can generate:
Financial Results.
Employee engagement relates directly to financial success. Valtera, Inc., studied 93 companies of varied industries that completed Valtera’s employee engagement index. The 25% of the companies with the highest engagement indices measured 7% profitability and 7% return on assets. The opposite one-fourth of the companies, those with the lowest engagement scores, showed a minus 5% and a minus 4%, respectively. The positive numbers may be due to increased revenues, decreased expenses, or a healthy combination. It’s pretty clear that any of these results from engaged employees.
Proactive Employees.
One demonstration of an employee’s engagement is her proactivity. A driver of engagement is “the organization’s ability to quickly resolve customer concerns.” At the individual level this translates to proactive anticipation of customer requests, education of customers with information not otherwise available, and providing emotional support for upset customers. It’s pretty clear that this proactivity does connect the employee’s engagement and the customer’s satisfaction.
Valuable Workplace.
The workplace populated by engaged employees has greater value for all employees and for the business as a whole. Campbell Soup Company has applied the Gallup Q12 survey since 2001. At that time Campbell’s employee engagement scores were “close to the bottom of Gallup’s client company rankings”. Campbell’s engagement levels have subsequently risen to the top quartile among all companies that conduct a similar survey. Campbell’s has been recognized as a “best place to work” by Gallup, the City of Philadelphia, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Canada (all locations in which Campbell’s has a major presence). Campbell’s website concludes their Employee Engagement page with this statement: We believe our work environment has contributed to our relatively stable retention rate and our improved marketplace performance.
Any one of these successes — financial results, proactive employees, a valued workplace — is likely reason enough to make a stand. Just imagine the power of achieving all three.
